Schema Focused Therapy (SFT)
Schema Focused Therapy (SFT) is an evidence-based approach that delves into the deep-rooted patterns of thought and behaviour known as schemas, which individuals develop early in life. These schemas are formed based on experiences and interactions with caregivers, shaping perceptions of oneself, others, and the world. Often, maladaptive schemas arise from unmet emotional needs or negative experiences, leading to the development of life traps, or recurring patterns that perpetuate distress and dysfunction.
In SFT, clients work with therapists to identify and understand their schemas and life traps, exploring how they influence thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in various life domains. Through targeted interventions and cognitive restructuring, clients learn to challenge and modify maladaptive schemas, fostering healthier beliefs, behaviours, and relationships. By addressing the underlying core issues, SFT aims to promote lasting change and improve overall well-being.
At Psychology Centre Newcastle, SFT is implemented by experienced therapists who provide a supportive and validating environment, empowering clients to break free from the chains of their past and move towards a more fulfilling future.
