Positive Behavioural Support (PBS)
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a comprehensive, research-based strategy aimed at improving the quality of life for individuals by increasing positive behaviours and decreasing challenging behaviours.
Rooted in the principles of applied behaviour analysis (ABA), PBS takes a proactive and educational approach, focusing on teaching and reinforcing desirable behaviours rather than merely punishing undesirable ones. This strategy is person-centred and takes into account the individual's unique needs, preferences, and environmental factors to develop tailored interventions.
At Psychology Centre Newcastle, PBS is integrated into therapeutic practices to support individuals with behavioural challenges, including those with developmental disorders, autism, and ADHD. Therapists and support staff collaborate with clients, families, and sometimes educational or workplace settings to implement supportive strategies that promote positive social interactions, effective communication, and adaptive coping skills.
Through the use of PBS, Psychology Centre Newcastle aims to foster a supportive environment that not only addresses specific behavioural issues but also enhances overall mental health and well-being, enabling individuals to participate fully in their communities and lead fulfilling lives.
